Guo Pei: Couture Beyond is the first time the Vancouver Art Gallery has presented an exhibition focused on art and fashion. The showcase focuses on Chinese designer, Guo Pei, pronounced [ku̯ó pʰěɪ̯], who captures the splendour of China’s last imperial dynasty, the Qing Empire from 1644-1912. Guo Pei practices with traditional craftsmanship that has landed her on TIME Magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People and the only Chinese national designer invited to join Paris’sprestigiouss Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.
With avante-grade silhouettes, Guo’s most influential piece made it’s way to mainstream media when she dressed Rihanna at the 2015 Met Gala. Couture Beyond includes significant examples from Guo’s earliest collections from 2006 to her last presentation in 2017. These images do not bring justice to the beauty of each of Guo’s hand-stitched designs and will leave you in awe of the creations that can take up to 30,000 hours to create.
Guo Pei: Couture Beyond will be available for public view from October 13th, 2018 until January 20th, 2019.
