Closet Confessions: Nicky Gillam of Violet Hill Boutique

Today is the first installment of the newest segment on the blog, “Closet Confessions”!! You will be able to take an intimate snoop inside the closets of the men and women that make the Vancouver fashion scene what it is!

Today we go into the closet of Nicky Gillam, the owner and mastermind behind Violet Hill Boutique in Richmond, BC. Violet Hill offers you labels such as Left On Houston, Maison Scotch, Gentle Fawn and J.Brand just to name a few and is the go-to shop for edgy jewelry and fantastic footwear.

If you’ve met Nicky you know that her style always on point and you can guarantee that her style will change the next time you see her. She has such a mix of vintage, designer, modern and classic; all components of what makes her style unique.

As I stepped into her eclectic home filled with art and the scent of amazing floral candles I walked up her book bordered staircases to enter the land of designer goodness! I’m not just talking a Marc Jacobs whatever here and there I’m talking Alexander Wang before he was H.O.T, Lanvin, Proenza Schoulder, DVF, Givenchy..just to name a few!

With a closet in her bedroom dedicated to the essentials another space was needed for double rolling racks of jackets, dresses, pants, etc. It was clear that Nicky, indeed has a lot of clothes!

“This picture shows off my love of pattern and a great summer dress. Light easy dresses are my summer go to outfit. “

“Sparkle Dress! I saw this on Muse’s Facebook page and called right away to make sure they still had my size. I went down with Georgia (from Social Experiment) and picked it up. A dress with sleeves is my best friend and the matte sparkle was just the look I was going for. I wore it to a prom themed stag & doe party and had a blast wearing it. “

“Love this Steve Alan coat. It’s a forever piece and I’m so glad I picked it up from Anthropologie in Seattle. Then my vintage Proenza Schouler dress also from Seattle. My parents took me on a little getaway to Seattle a few summers ago just before the store opened. (I was crazy stressed, recently broken hearted and my parents were so wonderful to take me away to de-stress). I was so thrilled to get my hands on this dress from a great consignment based store in downtown Seattle (which I can’t remember the name of). Major confession – I have yet to wear it but this summer I will for sure. “

“These Kelsi Dagger wedges were from the store last summer. I love the cognac colour and I feel that shade of brown always looks good on gingers like myself.”

” I Love the detail of the Rebecca Minkoff bag! I was drawn to it because of the texture and the bright colour. I’ve only used it a hand full of times because I have to be in just the right mood to think I can carry off a hot pink bag.”

“I have a weird obsession with mason jars. I don’t know why but I do. I keep trying to find different ways to use them and display them.”

“I saw this Clutches of Karma clutch pop up on my twitter feed one day last winter and I emailed them away so I could get my hands on it. The colour, shape and texture all together is a lot of look but I think that’s what makes it so special. I wore it at my best friends rehearsal/final get together dinner before her New Years Wedding last December and I always think of that night when I wear it.”

“I’m obsessed with my I See Noise print. One of my best friends is in South Korea right now and I got a message from her saying she was watching an old episode of The Hills that featured Kelly Cutrone saying the above quote and she said when she saw it, it reminded her of me and I love that! It’s shown with my favourite black spiked clutch from 3.1 Philip Lim and then a skull clutch by S’nob. “

“This Marc Jacobs necklace was my first m by mj piece that I got years ago from Holts. I use to wear it all the time when I went to UVIC. One weekend I went out and when I came back I realized one the M’s was missing. I’m pretty sure one of my roommates borrowed it and that’s when it fell off! PS: It’s OK Emma (roomie). I still love you.”

“A mini display of my fav bracelets. Lots of Bfrends and sparkle!”

“These rings are some of my favs and every day pieces. I’m obsessed with Social Experiment and i’m very proud to carry them at the store. The other larger ones are Low Luv x Erin Wasson. They are massive and make a statement and I LOVE them.”

“Maison Scotch has really great denim right now. I loved this light grey wash. Other than Jbrands, it’s the only denim I wear.”

“I’ve been keeping and collecting my VOGUES since 2009. I remember seeing an episode of Sex & The City and Carrie had a massive wall unit filled with old magazines. I was inspired by that and I want my collection to be wall consuming eventually. This photo also shows off my favourite accessory of all time – my Alexander Mcqueen scarf. I like that it’s a different pattern and not the classic skull one. I was drawn to it because of the skeletal mermaids. It reminded me of home and the water. I purchased it when I was in England last visiting my family. A rare treat.”
